With government okay on new agreement, Portugal likely to become hot destination for skilled Indians.
With the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approving the signing of an agreement on the recruitment of Indian citizens to work in Portugal last week, opportunities are likely to open up for many Indian skilled workers and professionals to migrate to the southern European country.
The agreement to be signed between Portugal and India on the lines of the migration partnership signed between the UK and India in may 2021 will add a new destination for Indian migrant workers in a European Union member nation.
An institutional mechanism under a new joint committee will be soon be set up for partnership and cooperation between India and Portugal on sending and accepting indian workers. The government-to-government mechanism proposed in the agreement will ensure that the movement of workers happens smoothly with the maximum support from both sides.
While the new pact is likely to benefit indians who are looking at job opportunities in Europe, Portugal’s golden resident permit programme which has been in place since 2012 already attracts several high net worth Indian investors.
The fast track permanent residency permit for applicants from non-EU countries who acquire property in Oortugal valued at € 500,000 or more or €350 000 or more for properties more than 30 years old or located in urban regeneration areas designated for refurbishing has been attractive for many Indians looking at setting up businesses in the EU countries.
